I joined Luminary Cloud as the second designer (~employee 30) at Series A (~150M funding).

With a mission to accelerate industrial R&D, Luminary Cloud provides a physics simulation platform for companies to analyze the performance of their industrial products digitally. Leveraging high performance computing on the cloud, the time to simulate and analyze a product feature is ~10 times shorter than traditional on-premise software.

Design Tenets 

  1. Duality: There are two modes that we adhere to in interactions: a. Automatic - Luminary drives b. Manual - User drives.
  2. Consider the Journey: Remember the overall perspective of a flow. Nothing should be designed in isolation but should consider what happens before and after.
  3. Context: Put related things next to each other. Give feedback in the moment (errors). This could include things like application specific choices (aero, internal flow, auto, etc.)
  4. Focus: Focus on task a user is trying to accomplish at that moment. Remove choices and allow users to go deeper (ex. Progressive disclosure).
  5. Less is More: We do not want to add unnecessary functionality. A user should be asked to give an input if it meets the following criteria: a. Only the user knows b. Common use case c. Cannot be automated.
  6. Just Enough: We aim to give users just enough control to do what they need to do and automate the rest.

The entire file import process is a blackbox besides being slow. User encounters file import failures without knowing reasons.

Problems include:
  1. Performance and latency issues
2. UI provides no time/phase estimate to the user.
3. UI provides no indication that users can safely move to other work.

Messages

UI components, including section message, form validation, toast, and banner, have 4 alert states.



There are three levels of in-app message display.
  1. Platform level: display across platform on every pages
  2. Project level: display across pages within a project
  3. Page level: display contextually on a page
